Agreement between the Ministry of Post & Telecommunications and IDM
allows IDM to offer broadband Internet access over DSL soon in
Lebanon
IDM is pleased to announce that on January 3rd 2006, it has signed
with the Ministry of Post & Telecommunications (MPT) a
Memorandum of Understanding that will allow IDM to offer broadband
Internet access over DSL (Digital Subscriber Line). The service will
be commercially available once the relevant decrees will be
finalized and issued from the Council of Ministers.
DSL uses advanced digital signal processing to squeeze massive
amounts of information through normal twisted-pair telephone lines.
The service is delivered through a special DSL modem connected to
the phone line. DSL lets the user enjoy fast internet access over
the existing telephone line while still using the phone to make and
receive calls.
The service will come in different bundles and packages with
bandwidth speeds ranging from 256 Kbps to 2 Mbps and above, subject
to the telephone infrastructure. When comparing to 33 Kbps dial-up
the entry level of the new service will be at least 10 times faster,
with a permanent connection to the Internet.
With an estimated total of worldwide DSL subscriber base of 110
million users in June 2005, DSL is the world’s most popular
broadband technology.
As not all pricing elements are yet available, the cost of the
service for residential users will be around 50 U.S Dollars for 512
kbps per month with an initial set up fee of around 100 U.S Dollars.
The service to non-residential users will also be offered at a
different price, taking into account heavier usage of the bandwidth
and higher availability factors.
DSL will be complementing IDM’s existing range of Internet product
line ranging from low speed dial up to corporate solutions opening
the door to a multitude of additional applications and services.
